Eating with Braces

We want to make sure that all our patients know the proper way to take care of their braces. It is important to know what kinds of foods or objects could be damaging to your orthodontic appliances. While undergoing orthodontic treatment, be cautious and care for your braces so that you can show off your new smile as soon as possible. Certain foods can cause loose or broken braces, in addition to plaque and tooth decalcification. Remember to avoid all foods that are hard, sticky or chewy.

Hard foods to avoid:

  • Popcorn
  • Pizza Crust
  • Rice Crispy Treats
  • Doritos
  • Fritos
  • Cheetos
  • Hard Taco Shells
  • Hard Candy
  • Lollipops
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Ice
  • Taffy

Foods that need special treatment before eating:

  • Apples, carrots and celery (cut into small bite-sized pieces)
  • Chicken wings or any meat on the bone (remove from the bone)
  • Hard cookies (soften with milk)
  • Corn on the Cob (Remove from cob)
  • Foods that cause decay (clean immediately after eating)

Your teeth are more susceptible to decay while wearing braces.  So, it’s important to clean your teeth right after eating any sweets. This includes any kind of candy or sugary beverage. It’s best to limit these, too, because even if you clean right away, your teeth may still suffer damage.

Regularly check your braces for loose, bent, or broken appliances. If you notice a loose/broken appliance, call our office immediately to arrange an appointment for repair.
